The Best Design Decision I Ever Made Was Deleting Half My Work

The Best Design Decision I Ever Made Was Deleting Half My Work

One of the hardest lessons I've learned as a designer is this:

More doesn't always mean better.

I used to believe that every screen needed to showcase my creativity.

Extra illustrations.

Fancy animations.

Multiple call-to-action buttons.

Decorative icons.

Colorful gradients.

The screen looked impressive.

But it also looked overwhelming.

Then I came across a quote that stuck with me:

"Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to remove."

That changed everything.

Now, every time I design a screen, I challenge myself.

Can I remove one button?

Can I shorten this sentence?

Can I simplify this flow?

Can I make this easier?

Good design isn't about how much you can add.

It's about knowing what users don't need.

The best interfaces often feel effortless.

Not because they were easy to create.

But because someone took the time to remove the unnecessary.

As designers, our job isn't to impress users.

Our job is to help them succeed.

And sometimes, that means designing less.
